The heat is descending upon Chiang Mai! Summer days are always followed up trips to swimming pools and of course touring your local ice cream shops. We collected a small list of 5 Ice Cream shops you should visit in Chiang Mai to help you stay cool and escape the heat while simultaneously enjoying something irresistibly delicious.

 

100 Flavors

100 Flavors has been making ice cream in Chiang Mai for over 20 years! Their ice cream shop has only been open for eight years, relatively new compared to their experience. From shaved ice to scoops to cones this shop has everything to satisfy your ice cream needs.

100 Flavors informed us that many flavors they carry are Vegan-friendly. In fact, 80 percent of what they carry is VEGAN! That is 80 percent of 240 different styles of ICE CREAM!  100 Flavors controls every aspect of their Ice Cream which is made attentively with the goal of providing premium ice cream to their customers. From selecting raw materials to production and without preservatives.

Yes, they have over 240 flavors and are hoping to get 500 flavors this year! Inshop 60 to 70 style are available daily. Their menu is as creative as you would expect. We were lucky enough to get to try a couple of different and exciting scoops.

We started with De Hung Lay, yes that is the curry, and it does have pieces of pork in it. Mango with fish sauce which was tastier than it sounds. We also had Black panther charcoal rum raisin, Nam Prik Kapi, Matcha Green Tea, Taro, young coconut and last but not least Durian Sticky Rice. The flavors and menu are always being rotated so if you are looking for a specific one make sure to call ahead. If you are not sure what to order, I asked 100 Flavors what their customers usually order, and they responded that Milo, Cheese, and Honey are always favorites.

I Tim Baan Yaii

Only open for ten months and a growing fans base. I Tim Baan Yaii is a cozy little shop that is set up in front of the owners Grandma’s house. It has a warm and welcoming feel as everyone was more than friendly. Besides being a local favorite, the specialty of this little shop is to make their ice cream not too overly sweet which is perfect for those who do not have a sweet tooth. While it is noticeably less sweet than other ice creams, it’s still delicious in its own right.

I Tim Baan Yaii carries a fixed 10 Flavors throughout the year. They do however make special ice cream of the month each month. So be sure to follow them to find out what will be their next special.

The flavors they carry are as follow Passion Fruit, Blueberry Yogurt, Hokkaido Milk Cookie, Mango Milk, Mint Chocolate, Green tea, Strawberry milk, Strawberry Sorbet, Chocolate, White Chocolate Almond.

A scoop of ice cream here starts at only 29 baht! We got to try to the blueberry yogurt on a chocolate almond waffle cone. Delicious! They also offer Yogurt Smoothies, Italian Sodas and Frappes if you are not in the mood for a cone.

Turtle’s Hard Ice Cream

Turtle’s Hard Ice Cream started off in a food truck and continued for nine years before opening up a shop. The current location is in a popular area of the old city and only a short walk from Thapae Gate. Only opened for four years, and they have gathered quite a strong following and its not hard to see why. Turtle’s coconut ice cream is made with not only coconut milk but with cream. So it has a creamery in texture and taste, and it makes a world of difference.

Turtles Hard Ice Cream carries 16 fixed flavors that they serve year round. The styles are as follow Chocolate, Wild Honey, Nutella Vanilla, Cookies and cream, Coconut ice cream, After Eight (mint chocolate), mango sorbet, strawberry sorbet, raspberry yogurt, caramel, vanilla Madagascar, rum raisin, passion sorbet, lemon sorbet and green tea. They customarily will make a special ice cream depending on whats in season. For example, they carry a Mangosteen ice cream when it is in season.  The fan favorites of this shop are Sorbet Mango, Cookies and cream, and yes Vanilla Nutella.

Johoney Coffee and Ice Cream

Johoney has been making ice cream for a little over nine years! They’ve owned a shop for the past 6 and recently move their new location eight months ago. It is beautiful, intimate spot to enjoy with the family.

Open every day, and they also have a carousel menu. The rotating list is between 60 flavors, and the shop always stocks 18 flavors. Worried about what will be in stock? Don’t worry! Chocolate and Honeycomb are fixed flavors that are more than ready to please your taste buds.

The flavors we were fortunate enough to try are Spicy green mango, Strawberry, Jambolan, Hokkaido, Mulberry, Honeycomb, Figs and Magical peach. The Spicy Green Mango was spicy, but it was worth every bite. For those not feeling like ice cream but still want to come along, Johoney offers dishes like custard cakes and of course coffee. Rosélato

Rosélato always has countless customers because of their beautiful sculpted ice creams. Inspired by gelatos and the tools they use to serve the ice cream. These beauties are as good as they look and they are all homemade! Rosélato started two years ago, and their newest location in Niman has only been open for six months. Their signature is Vanilla which gets it blue tinge from the local Thai Butterfly Pea flower.

Rosélato carries a total of fixed eight flavors in total. Occasionally they will make new styles depending on the seasonal elements. Other exciting flavors like Rose ice cream is made from rose water, while Yakult is created from a local favorite drinking yogurt. They also carry Gelato Floats which are topped with their famous rose shaped ice cream.

Ploy which is a traditional style dessert made with shaved ice made from coconut milk, some Thai dessert toppings, lotus root and of course their signature Rose.
